18 November 2025

It is available on online stores Amazon and Edizioni Intra – and soon on others (Mondadori Store, IBS, etc.) – my latest book Synthetic Reality. How the Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence (Re)write Human Experience, 138 pages, published in the “Università” and “Saggiamente” series by Edizioni Intra.

Synthetic Reality explores the impact of artificial intelligence on the collective mind, society, and law. In the volume, I analyze the ethical and political transformation of technology, proposing a new digital humanism founded on responsibility, transparency, and global cooperation. Through a dialogue between philosophy, science, and institutions, the book invites us to overcome the fear of the algorithm to build a future in which artificial intelligence becomes a tool of freedom, not domination, returning to humanity the moral measure of its own power.

The essay, which will also be published in English and Spanish next year, features a preface by Joaquim Jorge and Catarina Moreira, and a postface by Ermanno Vitale.

Joaquim Jorge is one of the most authoritative scientists in the field of computer science, with a particular focus on human-computer interaction and technologies for the metaverse. He is a Full Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering of the Lisbon Technical Institute, where he holds the UNESCO Chair on Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality. For decades, his work has explored the frontiers of advanced user interfaces and augmented reality, placing him among the pioneers in the study of how technology can shape and enhance human experience in digital spaces. His preface offers the reader an authoritative and foundational perspective on the technologies that are building our future.

Catarina Moreira is a leading researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, specializing in machine learning, explainable AI, and the ethical and social implications of emerging technologies. She is co-holder of the UNESCO Chair on Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality at the Department of Computer Engineering of the Lisbon Technical Institute. Her research focuses on how to develop AI systems that are not only powerful and efficient, but also transparent, reliable, and aligned with human values, providing a critical and indispensable lens for deciphering the complex relationship between man and machine. Her preface enriches the volume with a deep and current vision of the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence.

Ermanno Vitale is an eminent scholar of political philosophy and ethics, formerly Full Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Valle d’Aosta. His research areas range from the history of modern political thought to contemporary issues of public ethics, with particular attention to the dilemmas posed by scientific and technological development. His profound knowledge of the foundations of the social contract, rights, and justice makes his a unique and valuable voice for questioning the philosophical implications of emerging technologies. His postface offers a learned and profound reflection on how the metaverse and artificial intelligence are redefining the boundaries of the human, community, and ethical experience.
